A look into using Social Networking Sites to Drive Business

Admin Jump Start - Thursday, April 04, 2013

What’s all this talk about Internet Marketing? How is social media being utilized by businesses, and how does this apply to my business?

Internet marketing, or online marketing, refers to advertising and marketing efforts that use the Web and e-mail to drive direct sales via e-commerce as well as sales leads from Web sites or emails. Internet marketing and online advertising efforts are typically used in conjunction with traditional types of advertising like radio, television, newspapers and magazines. Internet marketing can also be broken down into more specialized areas such as Web marketing, email marketing and social media marketing:

The best way to connect to your business customers is speaking to them directly. Now, direct 1-on1 conversations is inadvertently the most effective way to accomplish this. But most of the time, it does not stop there, because the Internet is changing faster than ever. New tools are being uses such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, ChatOn, etc.

Increasing the use of these tools can build large networks to increase your business reputation, services, and sales. Customers also gain a sense that you actually believe and care about their success. It also provides a human element to businesses, meaning that customers and potential customers will feel much more comfortable coming back to your business.

In 1997 the Internet reached 50 million users in the USA. Facebook gained over 100 million users in the U.S. from January to 2009 to January 2010, marking a 145 percent growth rate within one year. If you own your own business and have not embraced social media as a huge component to increase your sales, and repeat customers, it’s time to get on the bus.

As of January 2013 LinkedIn reports more than 200 million business professionals encompassing job seekers, employees, and company owners.

Leveraging these networks to grow your business is a must nowadays, but keep in mind a few things to think about before jumping into the deep end.

1. What are the primary needs of my business?
2. Why would I use this particular social media platform?
3. What markets am I trying to capture?
4. Which social sites do I want to get involved with?
5. Who will be the primary point of contact managing the page?
6. Who can make edits to the content?
7. What type of personality are you portraying to your customers?

Choosing which social engines to start your company on can be overwhelming. Start small and grow into each one at a time. Strategy is the key, even though all of these networks are similar in what they do, each one serves a unique purpose.

When it comes to generating leads, old methods are just as important as the new ones. Jumpstart just printed a snail mailer that was designed by 70plus2. We've already had a 90% response on a mail campaign we sent out a few months back, and we are looking to emulate the same results with this one! We are frequently asked by our clients "How do I drum up new business for our company?" Our answer does not exclude any methods new or old. Sometimes, depending on your type of business, something as simple as a mailer can do the trick.
